This animation shows what happens to the energy as it is stored and released from the spring that the crank is mounted on.  As the spring is compressed, the energy delivered to the chain lags behind the energy delivered to the pedal.  When the energy is released from the spring and the bottom bracket is pushed back up, the chain energy catches back up to the pedal energy.   Notice how the bottom bracket center point moves down and up on the crank arm position graph.
