Examining the Science behind Bicycle Performance
About
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupery - poet and pioneering aviator

The bicycle in it’s various forms is one of the most efficient machines invented. Not only in terms of energy put in (pedaling effort) to energy out (forward motion), but also in terms of the functional efficiency of it’s components. There is endless variation in the bicycle frame alone. Materials and geometires are constantly evolving. But what all these designs have in common is the objective of meeting the function of the frame without any waste.
Welcome to Bike Think. This site is dedicated to investigating the fundamental science behind bicycle frames and components. In part this is to satisfy and share my curiosity about bicycle technical topics. Hopefully these investigations will also help you in making bicycle purchase decisions.
The site will not contain specific product reviews. I want to remain as neutral as possible to the conclusions of research and articles on the site. I will make every effort to stick to facts and stay away from opinions and speculation. As a result of this limitation, and time limitations, articles may not be comprehensive or conclusive. I just hope to add to the general knowledge and understanding of bicycle performance.
I started this site in 2004 and developed articles focused around frame design. It then sat idle for the next 7yrs. I’m ready to bring it back to life. Please feel free to add comments below about what topics you think would be interesting.
